Intent
At Wood Field Primary School, we are passionate about music and believe that it is an essential part of a broad and balanced curriculum. We believe that music unlocks children’s creativity and is a “universal language” that is accessible to children of all academic abilities. Music is also a standalone subject in its own right; our curriculum helps children to feel that they are musical and develop a life-long love of music. We focus on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding that children need to become confident performers, composers, and listeners. The music curriculum is enhanced through the wider Wood Field offer including a singing assembly and a ‘listening’ assembly. The music reflects the cultural heritage of Wood Field school. The children are exposed to music from all around the world and across generations, teaching children to respect the music of all traditions and communities. The music also reflects the full diversity of protected characteristics (disability / gender / neurodiversity / LGBTQ etc). Singing is a vital part of musical learning and all pupils are given a variety of opportunities to sing and perform to different audiences at school including weekly “Singing Assemblies”, Harvest Festival, Easter and our popular carol concerts held at local churches. Children of all singing abilities are given the opportunity to join one of the school choirs, which perform at a variety of community events. We are committed to supporting Peripatetic music lessons at Wood Field and a wide range of instrumental tuition is offered by peripatetic teachers including piano, guitar, IRock (band), and singing. We are delighted that this value we place on music provision has been recognised and as such Wood Field have been awarded a Music Mark for the last two years. |
