Intent
At Wood Field we believe that each child should be able to experience a wide range of creative opportunities in our diverse and knowledge rich art curriculum that is carefully aligned to meet the demands of The National Curriculum’s statutory attainments targets. During a child’s time at Wood Field, they are introduced to over 80 artists from diverse backgrounds both contemporary and classic from different, neuro-diversities, ages and genders.
At Wood Field, we have a challenging skills progression programme that children are exposed to from Reception through to year six. Children build upon and embed these skills as they progress through the school. There are many opportunities to revisit and recall prior learning and ‘make it stick’. Our broad and balanced Art curriculum is broken down into four key elements: Drawing, Painting and Mixed Media, sculpture and 3D and finally, Craft and Design. Our units are based upon these four artistic elements and children take part in a sequence of engaging lessons on alternate half terms (three across a school year).
Children begin their artistic journeys from Reception and record their creations in their ‘Mark Making Folders’. The children are given opportunities to explore their art and independence on a daily basis in the colourful and well resourced ‘Creative Areas’ that harness open ended artistic creation which is a fundamental part of ‘Development Matters’. From year One onwards, children are given their own hard, ring bound Art Books to take up with them through the school, a high quality, visual method of documenting and reflecting upon their progress. Children are taught to look at art with a critical eye through our five strands: Generating Ideas, Using art books, Making Skills, Knowledge of Artists and Evaluating and Analysing.
At Wood Field we strive to ensure that every child has the opportunity to create, appreciate and learn in a stimulating environment by entering both local and National competitions and involving the children in creative projects for the school community.
